New mātaitai bylaws for Lyttelton Harbour
The Minister of Fisheries has approved bylaws for the Lyttelton Harbour/Whakaraupō Mātaitai Reserve. These bylaws set the following changes.
The bylaws for the Whakaraupō Mātaitai Reserve prohibit the harvest of all shellfish, other than pāua, tuaki (cockles), pipi, kūtai (mussels), pāpaka (crabs) or tio (oysters).
A new daily shellfish bag limit of:
Five pāua
Thirty tuaki (cockles)
Thirty pipi
Thirty kūtai (mussels)
Ten pāpaka (crabs)
Ten tio (oysters)
The bylaws prohibit taking tuaki (cockles) from Walkers Beach (Ōtamahua/Quail Island) and Rec Bay (Purau).
Daily finfish bag limits of:
Twenty pātiki (flounder)
Two rāwaru (blue cod)
Five hoka (red cod)
Ten mararī (butterfish)
Ten moki
Two kōiro (conger eel)
The bylaws set a daily limit of 10 finfish, within the maximum combined daily limit of 30, for any other species not named above.
And, prohibit taking whai repo (skates and rays) from within the Whakaraupō Mātaitai Reserve.
These bylaws come into effect on 24 April 2020.
