Proposed marine protection in southeast South Island waters

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, public consultation has been postponed on the proposed network of marine protection in southeast South Island waters.

The proposed network includes 6 no-take marine reserves (Type 1), 5 marine protected areas (Type 2), which would impose a range of restrictions to fishing, and one kelp protection area where commercial harvest of bladder kelp would be prohibited.

A map of the proposed network can be found here https://www.doc.govt.nz/globalassets/documents/conservation/marine-and-coastal/semp/network-1-map.pdf

A decision to restart public consultation will be made at a later date, once COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted https://www.fisheries.govt.nz/news-and-resources/media-releases/marine-protection-consultation-postponed/
